Another Successful Concert for the AHC with a Tribute to Giorgos Zambetas
In another memorable cultural event, the Australian Hellenic Choir gave a stellar performance last weekend with an entirely new repertoire and a number of choristers performing solo for the first time.
Over 200 guests attended the soirée in Sans Souci enjoying the afternoon with a luncheon and a concert celebrating the centenary of the birth of Giorgos Zambetas. Musical Director Leon Vitogiannis arranged some of the most popular songs of this prolific and highly regarded Greek composer, mostly known for his film music during the 1960s and 70s. The arrangements gave the Choir, and the soloists in particular, the opportunity to shine.
“The outcome of the concert has surpassed our expectations”– said the President of the Choir John Saratsopoulos. “Except for one song that we performed a few years ago, all the repertoire was new and the Choir put in a lot of work since the beginning of the year. We are very pleased with our performance and the support we received from the community. We’ll continue to keep the bar raised” – promised Mr Saratsopoulos who also praised the new-look Choir committee for its dedication, leadership and high level of cooperation.
Members of the audience, who represented three generations, expressed their admiration for the performance. Some revealed the feelings of nostalgia they immersed themselves in, while others admitted hearing the songs for the first time. The family vibe of the concert, created by the numerous Choir relatives of all ages, contributed to the pleasant atmosphere at the event.
The concert also highlighted one of the Choir’s most enduring features since its inception in 2018 – the productive cooperation between the young and talented Maestro Leon Vitogiannis and the choristers, who are mostly first and second generation Greek Australians. Their dedication and hard work under the guidance of a professional musical director has established the Australian Hellenic Choir as a significant cultural player in the Greek community.
Thirty-four choristers singing in four part harmony participated in the Zambetas concert, with eleven of them performing also as soloists. The four-piece accompanying band for this performance consisted of highly skilled professional musicians – two bouzouki players, a guitarist and a pianist.
AHEPA Sydney & NSW Inc was a major sponsor, while a pleasant surprise for the guests was the lucky door prize – a necklace and earrings pearl set valued at 1,600 dollars, donated by BOWER Haus.
The Harmony of Chorus and Culture
The Australian Hellenic Choir was established in February 2018. Under the guidance of James Tsolakis, the choir set an ambitious course to engage the community and to build a valuable resource for the Hellenic diaspora. Within a very short time, the Choir has become well known and is being called on to perform at official functions, commemorative events, and undertakes its own soirees and concerts.
