The Music

The Choir is continually expanding its repertoire.

Greek music is diverse, encompassing ancient styles, monophonic Byzantine chant, and a rich tradition of folk and popular music. Modern Greek music is characterized by its modal melodies, often with a sinuous, expressive quality, and a mix of traditional and Western instruments. Key features include diverse genres like demotic, rebetiko, and laiko, as well as a history of prominent instruments like the bouzouki, laouto, and clarinette.

The Choir takes an innovative approach to Greek music, to Greek composers and to Greek Poetry.

The Choirs repertoire celebrates various genres including Demotika, Rebetika, Laika, Nisiotika, and Entekhno music and songs.

Demotika is traditional style of Greek folk music and is a major part of Greek culture.

Rebetika are urban style songs that tell the stories of love and hardship from the early 20th century.

Liaka are popular songs of the people often considered a continuation of folk music.

Nisiotika are songs from the Greek Islands, and especially from the Aegean Islands.

Entekhno music or also known as art songs is orchestral music with elements from Greek folk.  Often based on the works of Greek Poets.

The Choir champions the works of famous Greek composers such as Mikis Theordorakis, Manos Hatzidakis, Yannis Markopoulos, Mimis Plessas, Stavros Xarcharkos, and a number of Liaki composers.

Our concerts often feature a selection of music from one genre as we like to tell a story with each concert event.   The Choir has full scale concerts with Greek band and large orchestras, Soirees and smaller community events as requested.
